Walk-a-thon Fundraiser NZ
A walk-a-thon is a sponsored walking event where students raise money per lap or kilometre. It suits every age and fitness level and runs on pledges, so almost everything raised is profit.
A walk-a-thon is one of the simplest a-thons to run. There is no stock to buy and no supplier to pay, so the sponsorship money students bring in goes straight to the school. Walking suits everyone, which means the whole school can take part at once instead of a handful of families selling to their neighbours.
You only need a safe course or field, so it takes less setup than most events while still bringing families together on the day.
How a walk-a-thon works
Students collect sponsors ahead of the event, either a set amount per lap or kilometre or a flat pledge for taking part. Pledges are recorded on a form sent home or gathered online before the day.
On the day, students walk a marked course or set of laps while families cheer them on. The pledged money is handed over once the walking is done. Online collection makes this part easier because sponsors pay when they pledge.
Why a walk-a-thon works
High margin
Pledge money has almost no cost behind it, so nearly everything raised is profit for the school.
Everyone can take part
Walking suits all ages and fitness levels, so no student is left out of joining in.
Simple to organise
You only need a safe course or field, so a walk-a-thon takes less setup than most events.
Sponsors give freely
People pledge generously when the money goes straight to the school and the kids are doing the work.
Other a-thon events
If walking is not the right fit, the same sponsorship model works for a range of events. Pick the one that suits your students and your space.
Read-a-thon
Students get sponsored per book or per minute read. A quiet a-thon that works well indoors.

Setting up an online page for your walk-a-thon means sponsors pledge and pay in one step, so there is no cash to count or chase afterwards. It also lets family who live out of town back a walker. See how Raised handles the collection.
