Learn-a-thon Fundraiser NZ
A learn-a-thon, or knowledge-a-thon, is a sponsored challenge where each student picks something to learn and sponsors back them to get there. It runs on pledges, so almost everything raised is profit.
Most a-thons ask every student to do the same thing. A learn-a-thon lets each one choose. One student learns their times tables, another learns 50 words of te reo Māori, another memorises a poem for assembly. Sponsors back the goal, and the money goes straight to the school.
There is no stock to buy and no event day to organise, and it suits students who would rather not run a fun run.
How a learn-a-thon works
Each student agrees a learning goal with their teacher, then collects sponsors for it. Pledges can be a flat amount for reaching the goal or an amount per item learned, such as per word or per times table.
Over two to four weeks, students work towards their goal at school and at home. The event ends with a class or assembly session where they show what they learned, and sponsors pay what they pledged.

Pledge money has almost no cost behind it, so nearly everything raised is profit for the school.
Students choose the goal
A child who would never enjoy a fun run can be sponsored to learn a song, a karakia or their seven times table.
Fits any subject
Spelling lists, te reo Māori words, capital cities or a new skill. Teachers can tie it to whatever the class is already doing.
Sponsors see the result
Families love hearing what a student learned, and it gives them a good reason to pledge again next year.
