Athon Fundraiser NZ
An a-thon is a sponsored event where students raise money for an activity they complete, from reading to walking to dancing. It runs on pledges, not product sales, so almost everything raised is profit. Here is how it works and which a-thon suits your school.
An a-thon, whether it is a read-a-thon, walk-a-thon or dance-a-thon, earns more than a product drive for one simple reason. There is no stock to buy and no supplier to pay, so the sponsorship money students bring in goes straight to the school. Every child can take part, which means the whole school is raising money at once.
That mix of high margin and whole-school reach is why a well-run a-thon is usually one of the biggest fundraisers on the calendar.
How an a-thon fundraiser works
Students collect sponsors ahead of the event, either a set amount per unit, such as per book or per lap, or a flat pledge for taking part. Pledges are recorded on a form sent home or gathered online before the day.
The event is the celebration. Students read, walk, run or dance, families get behind them, and the pledged money is handed over once the activity is done. Online collection makes this part easier because sponsors pay when they pledge.
Why a-thons raise so much
High margin
Pledge money has almost no cost behind it, so nearly everything raised is profit for the school.
Whole school takes part
Every student can read, walk or take part in some way, which lifts the total far past a product sale.
Rewards an activity
An a-thon backs something students do already, whether that is reading, moving or learning.
Sponsors give freely
People pledge generously when the money goes straight to the school and the kids are doing the work.
Types of a-thon events
The same sponsorship model works for a range of events. Pick the one that suits your students and your space. Spell-a-thon, math-a-thon and bike-a-thon versions all work the same way.
Read-a-thon
Students get sponsored per book or per minute read. A quiet a-thon that works well indoors and in wet weather.

Walkers collect pledges per lap or kilometre. Suits every age and fitness level, so the whole school can join in.

Students run a course while getting showered in coloured powder. Loud, messy and the easiest a-thon to sell to kids.

The classic lap or course event. Students collect sponsors per lap or a flat pledge, then run on the day.

Setting up an online page for your a-thon means sponsors pledge and pay in one step, so there is no cash to count or chase afterwards. It also lets family who live out of town back a student. See how Raised handles the collection.
